Different species vary slightly with size and structure, all species have varies cast members which include soldier termites, worker termites, alates, king, queen and nymphs (immature termites).
- We use the soldier termite to identify which species is attacking your property. While different species vary in size, structure, morphology and physiologically the following basic rules can help you distinguish between termites and other insects. The soldier termite has an orange to dark brown head and a white body with forceps-like jaws used for defending the colony.
- The worker termite responsible for feeding the colony (and damaging timber) is soft bodied and a pale white to off-white colour ranging from 5-8mm in length.
- Termites are often associated with mudding, mud leads which can often be seen through gyprock and in corners of architraves, brickwork and in corners of concrete and fractures.
Do not disturb termites, why?
Once you think you’ve identified termites it is essential that they are not disturbed in any way. This includes:
- Spraying any insecticide e.g. mortein etc
- Poking and prodding
- Removing architraves, skirting boards, walls etc
When active termites are disturbed they are likely to retreat underground often attacking other parts of your home and property undetected. In addition to this disturbed termites can also have a negative impact on the initial treatment process.
What products does EPT use to treat a termite infestation?
EPT use a range of products and holistic termite treatment management programs to treat various termite infestations. Our main two programs are:
Termite Treatment Baiting and Monitoring Program:
This program is a very safe and environmentally friendly way to manage and eliminate termites. In ground stations are installed around your property to monitor for termite activity. The in ground stations contain a highly palatable and tasty timber. Once intercepted by the in ground station, bait is introduced. The termites continually feed on the bait passing it from member to member through a process called trophallaxis (the passing on effect) thereby distributing the bait throughout the whole colony. The whole colony is eliminated.
Above ground stations are used where activity is located in/on the structure for example: in the roof, door frames, timber flooring, trees, stumps etc. Above ground stations contain a bait matrix and are an essential component for gaining colony elimination.
Baiting and monitoring systems represent very green, clean and holistic termite management program as long as baiting and monitoring systems are well maintained they have longevity.
Products used: Sentricon, Exterra, Nemesis.
Non-repellent chemical treated zones:
Most termiticides are repellent and don’t actively kill termites in the soil. However, non-repellent termiticides do actively kill termites in the soil. As termites cannot detect the chemical, they continually foliage through it receiving a lethal dose. Once again through the process of trophallaxis the chemical is transferred to other termites.
Non-repellent chemicals work by applying them to the soil around the foundations of a structure. This means trenching around foundational walls, piers and concrete slabs. Where hard surfaces such as concrete impede access to the soil it needs to be drilled or preferably cut.
If active termites are found in or on a structure a colony control measure needs to be implemented prior to the application of the soil treatment such. Applications include termiticide dust and/or foam.
Non-repellent chemicals have little to no odour, have no effect on soil micro-organisms, plants and earth worms are water based and offer a long term residual control.
Products used: Termidor and Premise.
What termite treatment product/s and treatment mangageent systems are best suited to my property?
Certain structures and associated infestations suit some products better than others. Termite species, pattern of infestation, underlying geography e.g. sand stone rock shelf, topography, house construction, termite history just to name a few are all factors to consider when choosing the most appropriate product. For example a house on a rock shelf on a large slope is not suitable for any chemical application.
EPT will evaluate your property and recommenced one of the two options above to best manage your property.
